SSL Certificates – Frequently Asked Questions

We have put together some of the most frequently asked questions for you here.

General

What is an SSL Certificate?
A SSL certificate makes it possible to set up an encrypted connection between a client (for example a browser) and a server. The data are then transmitted in encrypted form and a check is carried out to see whether the data really do reach the server for which the certificate was issued.

How safe is the encryption key?
This depends on the server software and browsers used. Modern browsers and servers (from 2000 onwards) encipher the data with 128-bit, thus guaranteeing a very high degree of protection. When you are purchasing a SSL certificate, make sure it is suitable for this 128-bit encryption. This way, you provide visitors to your website with optimum protection.

So what do I need to be able to use an SSL certificate?
For an encrypted connection to an SSL server, you need your own server with its own root access and at least one IP address of your own. You can then install your certificate there yourself.

However, should you not have a server with a root access  or not have any free IP address, we offer web space that has already been configured with an IP address and fully installed certificate. This way, you benefit from an SSL certificate without having to install it.

Do the web pages have to be specifically programmed for SSL transmission?
No. You prepare your web pages as usual in HTML, PHP, Perl etc. and then download them onto your or our server. The fact that the data are transmitted in encrypted form between the server and the browser is of no relevance for practically all applications.

Application

What exactly goes on when application is filed for an SSL certificate?
When application is filed for an SSL certificate, it is first checked whether the domain name for which the certificate is issued, is registered and whether the owner data have been correctly registered there. Further review then focuses on whether the specified owner and contact person for the certificate (Admin C) are accurately featured.

Who can be the Admin C for an SSL certificate?
The Admin C for an SSL certificate can, for example, be the managing director of a company. In concerns and organisations, the head of the Technology Department can also be entered as such.

How long does application for an SSL certificate take?
Providing all documents are available correctly and in full, the check and issuance of an SSL certificate takes just a few hours on a workday.

Resellers and Agencies

What do I have to consider, as reseller and web agency?
Right from the start, you should make sure that all documents required for the application are to hand (business registration, excerpt from the Commercial Register, where applicable, excerpt from the Register of Associations etc.) and make sure that your customer has provided complete and accurate particulars. This way, your application can be rapidly dealt with.
